The Voice That Taught Us What to Want

Long before algorithms decided what we would see,

something else decided what we would want.

It spoke with confidence.

With repetition.

With the authority of familiarity.

We didn’t call it influence.

We called it normal.

The voices that shaped us didn’t announce themselves as teachers. They arrived through screens, stories, soundtracks, and symbols. They told us what success looked like. What mattered. What was worthy of attention. What kind of life counted.

And because those voices were everywhere, we trusted them.

Not consciously.

Habitually.

They taught us what to admire before we learned how to question. What to aspire to before we understood why. By the time we had language for choice, much of the choosing had already been done.

This is the part we forget when we talk about technology as if it introduced influence.

Influence was already here.

It just learned how to scale.

What algorithms inherited was not power, but precedent. A long history of outsourced judgment. A culture practiced in letting external voices tell us what was desirable, acceptable, or worth chasing.

The algorithm didn’t invent the impulse.

It automated it.

That’s why it feels so personal.

It’s speaking into grooves that already exist.

When we say we’re overwhelmed by choice, what we often mean is that we never fully claimed it. We learned to listen long before we learned to decide.

Seeing that isn’t an indictment.

It’s a recovery.

Because the moment you recognize the voice that taught you what to want, you also recover the possibility of choosing differently.

Not louder.

Not faster.

Just with your own voice finally back in the room.
