The Decision We Gave Away

At some point, decision making stopped feeling like a human responsibility

and started feeling like a risk.

We were told to trust the data.

Follow the process.

Let the system decide.

Not because we were incapable,

but because certainty felt safer than judgment.

This is how decisions quietly leave the room.

Not all at once.

One handoff at a time.

We give them to policies so no one has to be accountable.

To algorithms so no one has to be wrong.

To consensus so no one has to lead.

And when the outcome disappoints, we look for something to blame.

The system.

The tool.

The timing.

Rarely ourselves.

This is why technology has become such a convenient stand-in. It gives shape to avoidance. It absorbs discomfort. It lets us pretend the decision was inevitable rather than chosen.

But every system reflects the values of the people who designed it and the ones who defer to it.

When judgment disappears, responsibility doesn’t.

It just becomes harder to find.

Reclaiming decision making doesn’t mean rejecting tools or data or structure. It means remembering that no system can carry what only humans can hold.

Context.

Consequence.

Care.

The decision we gave away was never taken from us.

We offered it.

Gradually.

For relief.

And we can take it back the same way.

Not dramatically.

Not all at once.

Just by choosing to be present again

when it would be easier not to be.
