The first time I saw a machine that knew the answer before I finished asking the question, it was in a glass cabinet. My dad and I went to a discount store to get something for my mom. The tiles made your footsteps sound expensive even when your wallet wasn’t. The electronics section was like a VIP lounge for things. Radios stood in a line with quiet confidence. Televisions showed faces that spoke English perfectly. There were speakers that said they would make your living room sound like a concert, which was the last thing our small apartment needed. I remember a counter that had a key. There was a small gray rectangle with buttons behind the glass that knew more math than anyone in my family.
My parents taught me math the way they thought it should be taught. Paper. Pencil. A long look at the ceiling when the numbers wouldn’t do what they were supposed to. My dad really hated shortcuts. He didn’t call them shortcuts. He said they were cheating. He had gotten away from a war, a boat, and a life that didn’t always give you food. He thought it was important to show your work. He had faith in the steps. You gave six lines instead of five if the teacher asked for them. If the world gave you a door, you would knock and wait. You didn’t break into the house through the window. The calculator didn’t knock. It opened the door from the inside.
My dad told me to keep walking when I asked him what the little machine was. He said it in Vietnamese, and the way he said it made it clear that we weren’t that kind of family. I asked again because kids are the original version of annoying notifications. He sighed, which meant “I love you, but not right now” in father language, and then he told the clerk to open the cabinet. The lock opened when the man turned the key, and my father gave me the calculator like a bird would sit on a child’s shoulder. I pushed a button. The screen woke up with green numbers that looked like they lived in a nicer area.
He taught me how to add. I was ready for it to fight back or at least think about it like I did. It was easy for the numbers to fit together. I tried taking things away. The machine didn’t care about taking things away.
It was like a magic trick to multiply. It felt like a small crime to divide. Then I did something that would have made me lose my place if I had done it on paper. I typed a long string of actions that looked like a train. Adding, then subtracting, then multiplying, and finally dividing. I hit the equal sign, and the machine answered right away, as if speed were proof of character. I wanted to know where the answer came from. The machine didn’t say anything, which is what authority likes to hear.
I asked my dad if we could buy it while we were in the car on the way home. He looked at the road and then at the shape of our future and said no. He said that we were here to buy something for my mom, which was already a stretch. He said that the calculator was for people who lived in a different way. He meant both money and identity when he said that. We were the type of people who had answers in our heads. People who had paid to get in could use the calculator. He told me at dinner that the quickest way isn’t always the best way. He said that there is a process and that the process makes you stronger. He said this with love and the look of a man who had lived long enough to know that things take time.
I lay on the couch that looked like a bed that night and thought about speed. The calculator did more than just math. It fixed the time. It took the long hallway and made it into a door. A part of me felt awe. I felt a little hurt. I had been getting to know the struggle itself. The fight was my coach. The struggle taught me how to be patient and how to check my work before a teacher could. The fight called for respect. The calculator made the fight pointless. It was like getting through customs with someone else’s passport.
Years later, I met another machine that could answer questions, and this time it wasn’t behind glass. It lived in the school’s computer lab. The keyboards clicked like typewriters taking a deep breath, and the screens were thick. The teacher showed us Microsoft Excel, and I felt the first warm breeze of forgiveness. It wasn’t that I fell in love with math. I loved how Excel handled ideas. You could put one number in one place and another number in another place and watch them talk to each other through a formula. It felt like trying to get two shy people to dance. I hated having to memorize formulas in class, but I liked making them in a grid that came to life. The cells were like streets that finally connected the parts of the city where I lived.
I remember the first time a spreadsheet gave an answer that made a teacher raise her eyebrows. It was an average over a changing range, which was easy, but I had made the sheet smart enough to update itself. The numbers came after like well-trained dogs. For the first time, I realized that a tool could reward curiosity instead of punishing it. To me, Excel was not a way to get answers. It was a garden of logic. I learned how to ask a different question. What does this tool do to my focus? Does it make me smaller or bigger? Does it make me more present to other people, or does it send me to a chart?
When I first started working in customer service, the numbers marched into my days in their own uniforms. Average time to handle. Resolving issues on the first call. Percentage of happy customers. The dashboard loved being exact. The managers really liked the dashboard. We were judged by how quickly we could fix problems, which meant that the calculator had finally taken over the whole building. You were a hero if you could wrap up a problem in less than four minutes. If you took ten minutes because the person on the phone needed to be heard, you were a liability to be coached. I learned how to sound fast while still being a person. It is possible, but it takes a lot of work. I felt the old suspicion coming back at some point during those years. The numbers were correct, but the story was not.
I didn’t say no to the metrics. I learned how to change them into other languages. I made spreadsheets that showed what the dashboard was hiding. Sometimes the calls that took longer were the ones that stopped five more calls from happening. The agent with the medium speed might be the one who keeps the most customers three months later. The voice of a person doesn’t move in straight lines. The calculator wants lines that are straight. If you ask nicely, Excel can handle curves. After a long shift, I would go home and open a sheet on my laptop like a parent checks on a child who is sleeping. The cells were still, like empty rooms. I moved the columns around until I saw the story. It usually did. Then I would show it to a manager and watch as he did math with his heart.
People often ask me when I stopped being mad at machines. I’m not sure if I was ever mad. I was cautious. I was a refugee child who learned early on that promises can be both beautiful and costly. The calculator was a great promise. It made the future seem unfair. Why do some kids do algebra with a friend in their pocket while I did it with my dad’s voice in my head telling me to try again? I saw another truth later. Rich kids didn’t own the calculator. It was time’s. It fell apart. It gave you a minute you didn’t have and asked you what kind of person you would be with it. That question is still the same. Only the machines have.
I think back to all the times I wanted to break the glass in that cabinet now that I write and lead and try to keep both hands on the human part of the work. Not to take the tool. To let it go. Tools shouldn’t be like museum pieces. They should be friends who follow the rules of the house. It’s easy to follow my rules. It can stay if it helps me see someone better. If it helps me stay away from someone, I have to put it away. I have to spend that time on something that deserves a person if it saves me time. If it impresses me with speed, I have to find something to do slowly on purpose. If it answers too quickly, I’ll ask a better question.
People in Vietnam, where my parents were born, talk about time in a way that is hard to translate. In the morning, I like to go to the market, drink coffee, and talk to my neighbors. People do things, but they don’t brag about it. In Canada, where I grew up, time is a race that you can see on your calendar. It keeps track of the score. It tells who won and who lost. I learned how to breathe in between those worlds. I learned to respect the coworker who thinks a good day is one where they get a lot done and the neighbor who thinks a good day is one where they talk to people. The calculator is happy living in Canada. People in the market love it when you know the price without asking. Your neighbor in Vietnam would listen to you explain the problem and then get you another cup of coffee. If you stayed long enough, the numbers might turn into a story that everyone at the table agreed with.
I finally bought my own calculator as an adult because I needed it for a meeting. I put it on my desk and laughed at how much smaller my hand looked around it. I pushed a few buttons to see if the answers were nicer. No, they hadn’t. They were still right and impatient. The machine didn’t care if I had feelings about it. That made me like it more. It’s nice that some parts of life don’t have to deal with each other. I used it for an hour and then shut the drawer. I spend more time on spreadsheets now than on the little device, but I still take it out sometimes to remember how heavy it was when I was a kid.
I still believe in showing my work in some way. Not because the teacher might ask. Because my dad is watching from a place where time doesn’t matter. He wouldn’t praise the speed. He would say nice things about the care. He would ask if the answer helped someone or just made a number look better. He would say that being fast is only cool if you are also honest. He would pour coffee and point to the corner of the table where the sun shines and tell me that light is slow enough for people to see and fast enough for us to respect. He would ask me what I was doing with the time I had stolen from the machines.
My laptop now has artificial intelligence on it, like a cat that wants to eat every hour. It makes predictions with more confidence than I ever did when I was younger. It makes spreadsheets work and emails send themselves. It can change a meeting into a summary, a summary into tasks to do, and tasks to do into more meetings. I’m not scared of it. I take care of it. I remember the key and the glass. I know that every tool changes the person who uses it. If AI saves me an hour, I owe that hour to someone who needs to be heard without a clock in my eyes. If AI gives me a perfect sentence, I owe the next paragraph to my own voice, which isn’t perfect. Even if AI knows the answer, I still need to know what the question is.
The Human Code is not a set of software. It is a promise to stay in touch with each other. It is the choice to see saved time as a debt we owe to people. That first day, the calculator stole time. It turned a long hallway into a short one. I thought the crime was how fast it happened. The crime is what we do with the minutes we get back. We haven’t learned anything if we spend them refreshing a screen just to see a new number. If we spend them listening to someone who sounds like your mother on a tired afternoon, then the machine has done its job.
I still have a pencil. You know you’re alive when the point breaks at the worst times. I sometimes do a line of math on paper just to feel the weight of the graphite. Sometimes I open a spreadsheet and make a formula look like dawn across the sheet. Sometimes I sit with a coworker and ask what’s wrong, and then I don’t fix it right away because the dashboard would be happy. I remember the cupboard. I remember the key. I remember that someone is always opening the door. The question is who we become when we go through.
