FAQ
Straight answers about Roy Tran, Beyond the Title, and how the writing, the podcast, and the advisory work fit together.
Roy Tran is a Toronto-based global people and culture executive (CPO/CHRO) and the founder of Beyond the Title, a leadership platform and advisory practice. Over twenty years he has led HR transformation, total rewards, talent acquisition, labour relations, and board-level people governance across organizations from 3,000 to 90,000 employees in North America and Asia-Pacific. He writes and speaks on workforce architecture, organizational design, and what the AI era asks of senior people leaders.
Roy Tran is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He has worked across North America and Asia-Pacific, most recently on a five-country mandate spanning Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, Indonesia, and India.
Founder of Beyond the Title, the Toronto-based leadership platform and advisory practice he started in April 2026. He is also host of the Beyond the Title Podcast and author of the Beyond the Title newsletter. His prior in-house executive roles, including the global people and culture mandate across five Asia-Pacific countries, concluded in March 2026. Those are past positions, not current ones.
Twenty years in senior people and culture leadership: People and Culture leadership across a Crown Corporation of 17,000 employees, a national retail operation of 90,000, and a 35,000-person municipal workforce. His final in-house mandate, held until March 2026, was a global people and culture role across five Asia-Pacific countries, Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, Indonesia, and India, building a unified HR infrastructure across five labour environments in four languages. The full record is on the About page.
Since 2021. Roy Tran spent five years building the frameworks and the manifesto that became Beyond the Title before founding the practice in April 2026. The timing was deliberate. It was only after his global mandate across five Asia-Pacific countries that he felt ready to publish the observations and frameworks drawn from two decades of building people infrastructure. Beyond the Title is permanent, not a stopgap between roles: it continues alongside and beyond any executive role, contract, or assignment Roy takes in the future. That continuity is what the name refers to.
From 3,000 to 90,000 employees. Two figures are often confused: the municipal workforce he served was 35,000 people in total, and within it he personally led a 5,000-person frontline redeployment across 55 divisions through the COVID-19 pandemic. The 5,000 is the redeployment he led. The 35,000 is the size of the organization. He received the City Manager's Award in 2021 for that work.
Workforce architecture is people infrastructure that is deliberately designed rather than accumulated. The argument: most organizations inherited their HR systems one decision at a time. Real architecture holds regardless of who is holding it, the talent framework still running three leadership cycles later because it was built around principles rather than the preferences of whoever created it.

He received the City Manager's Award in 2021.

He writes about AI from the seat of a people and culture executive, not a technologist. The recurring subjects: what AI actually changes inside an organization's people systems, why the algorithm is the easy part and the workforce redesign is not, what the digital native myth costs organizations, and how senior HR leaders should think about judgment, trust, and accountability when synthesis is cheap. The work appears in the newsletter, the podcast, and in advisory engagements on people systems and AI-era design.
